Weekend Project: Let’s Fish Tank-Clean!

Watching fish swim in a tank gives us a very calming feeling, isn’t it? This reduces our stress and anxiety and just look at those tranquil movements of the fishes! And do you hear the soothing sound of water giving us inner peace? This is what our fish pets bring us.

The presence of an aquarium can improve mood and increase feelings of happiness. Not only can it be particularly beneficial in creating a serene environment at home, fishes are well-known as low maintenance pets. So this weekend, let’s make their home much more appealing. It’s time to clean the fish tank, fambam!

1. Prep the tank. Just do a partial water change to keep the good bacteria in the tank. Also, we want to  leave the fish in the tank to minimize their stress. But remember,  partial water change might not even be necessary — it all depends on how dirty your water is.

2. Unplug the equipment. Make sure to turn off the heater, filter, and any other electrical components to avoid accidents while cleaning. Close all valves as well.

3. Clean the Interior Glass. Use an algae scraper or sponge to clean the inside walls of the tank. Be gentle to avoid scratching the glass. For persistent algae, a scraper with a blade (if your tank is glass, not acrylic) can help.

4. Vacuum the Gravel Use a gravel vacuum to clean the substrate. Move the vacuum over the gravel to suck up debris, uneaten food, and fish waste.

5. Clean Decorations and Plants. If your tank decorations or artificial plants are covered in algae, you can remove them and scrub them with a dedicated sponge (no soap).

Rinse them in old tank water to avoid killing beneficial bacteria.

6. Change the Water. Prepare dechlorinated replacement water that matches the tank’s temperature. You should replace about 10-25% of the tank water during a routine cleaning.

Pour the clean, treated water back into the tank slowly.

7. Clean the Filter. Check the filter media (sponges, cartridges) for excess buildup. Clean or replace them as needed, but avoid cleaning all the media at once to preserve the beneficial bacteria. Rinse media in tank water (not tap water) to keep the beneficial bacteria alive.

8. Clean the Exterior Glass. Wipe down the outside of the tank with a damp cloth or aquarium-safe cleaner to remove dust and fingerprints. Do not use regular household cleaners as they can be toxic to fish.

9. Check the Equipment. Ensure that the heater, filter, and other equipment are working properly before plugging them back in.

10. Monitor the Fish

Watch your fish for signs of stress after cleaning. Give them time to adjust to the fresh water and cleaned environment.

Clean the tank regularly, typically once every 1-2 weeks, depending on the size of the tank and the number of fish. Never use soap or chemicals to clean the tank or equipment, as they can harm the fish. Following these steps will help maintain a clean and healthy environment for your fish.
