Hand washing is a skill that can be important in many regions with limited access to technology. In some cultures, hand washing is a traditional method that connects people to their heritage. Nowadays, especially in a busy household, we often do it to delicate garments like lingerie, silk, and wool that can be damaged by machine washing. Maybe sometimes, we do it to exercise. Are you game?
Prepare materials needed like sasin or sink, your favorite mild detergent or soap, white vinegar or bleach, towel (for pressing water out), clothesline, or drying rack. Now let’s get to the sequence.
- Sort Your Clothes. Separate light and dark colors to prevent bleeding. Separate delicate fabrics from heavier ones.
- On your basin, fill lukewarm water for most fabrics because hot water can shrink or damage certain materials. And for delicate items, use cold water.
- Add detergent. Use a mild detergent designed for hand-washing or a small amount of regular detergent. Avoid using too much detergent as it can be difficult to rinse out.
- Spot Stain. Apply a small amount of detergent directly to the stains and gently rub the fabric together.
- Submerge the clothes in the soapy water. Let them soak for 10-15 minutes for regular cleaning. For heavily soiled items, soak longer.
- Swish the clothes around in the water using your hands. For delicate fabrics, avoid wringing or twisting. Instead, gently press the fabric to release dirt.
- Rinse Thoroughly. Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean water.
Swish the clothes around to remove all soap residues. Repeat if necessary until the water runs clear.
- Remove Excess Water. Gently press the clothes against the basin to remove water.
- Lay the clothes flat on a clean towel, roll the towel up, and press to remove more water. Avoid wringing.
Now let’s get to the sanitizing part.
- Using White Vinegar: Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the final rinse water. Vinegar is a natural sanitizer and helps remove detergent residues.
- Using Bleach: For white and colorfast fabrics, add 1/4 cup of chlorine bleach to the rinse water.
- For colors, use color-safe bleach according to the product instructions.
- Using Laundry Sanitizer. Follow the instructions on the sanitizer product, usually adding it to the rinse water.
By following these steps, you can effectively hand-wash and sanitize your clothes, ensuring they are clean and safe to wear. But then again, you don’t have to do this, yourself. You can even ask your maid service to save time and energy.
