The House Dust Mites (Aren’t Supposed To Be In The House)

Do you often wake up in the morning with a stuffy nose? itch all over the body or eyes gone watery? You may think it’s allergic rhinitis due to the season but it may be something else. These symptoms are indicative of dust mites in your home and, boy, you may already have an allergic reaction to it! Let’s talk about it, shall we?

The house dust mite gets its name from its habitat – household dust. Unlike other common household bugs like fleas, dust mites don’t bite. Their bodies, secretions, and feces contain particular proteins that can trigger allergic symptoms in susceptible people.

So how do we get rid of this less than half a millimeter in length, hard to see with the naked eye, wingless with an oval-shaped body, light-colored body with fine stripes posing health risks to all members of the family? House cleaning. Regular house cleaning it is. And there’s more:

1. Ditch Rugs and Curtains. Dust mites enjoy warm areas they can settle in, which means that they find soft materials and warm layers just as appealing as you do. The best bet is choosing hardwood floors over carpets and shutters instead of curtains.

2. Wash Your Bedding Thoroughly. Aim to wash your bedding, including sheets, pillowcases, and blankets, at least once every one to two weeks. If you sweat a lot during sleep or have allergies, more frequent washing may be necessary.

3. Vacuum and Dust Often. Using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to trap small particles is the most ideal but regular is good enough. Include the seams of mattresses and upholstered furniture. Vacuuming causes house dust mite allergens to become airborne for up to 20 minutes, so if you are allergic to dust mites, you should wear a mask or ask someone else to vacuum.

4. Steam Clean Occasionally. You can only do so much with regular house cleaning, so you might want to get a more intense or deep house cleaning once in a while. Experts suggest hiring a steam-cleaning professional twice a year.

Following these steps can significantly reduce dust mite populations in your home and alleviate allergy symptoms associated with them. However, it’s essential to maintain these practices regularly especially the house cleaning to keep dust mites under control.
