Holiday gatherings like Thanksgiving dinner bring plenty of joy and cherished memories—but they also come with a fair share of chores. From clearing away food prep clutter to managing a mountain of dishes, the kitchen will keep you busy. And don’t forget about the laundry room—you’ll likely be spending extra time there too.
With all the delicious food and drinks, spills and splatters on clothing, tablecloths, or upholstery are almost inevitable. The key to stain removal is acting quickly, so it’s smart to start the day with a laundry plan. Make sure you’re stocked with the right supplies and ready to tackle any mess as soon as it happens.
- Red Wine and Cranberry Sauce. Sprinkle salt or baking soda on the stain to absorb the liquid. Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water. Dab white vinegar on the stain, then gently rub in liquid laundry detergent.
- Gravy and Greasy Stains. Use a paper towel or clean cloth to blot (not rub) the stain to remove excess grease or gravy.Sprinkle baking soda, cornstarch, or talcum powder on the stain to absorb the grease. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then brush it off.Apply a small amount of liquid dish soap (like Dawn) directly to the stain. Gently work it in with your fingers or a soft brush. Dish soap is great at cutting through grease.
- Potatoes and Other Starches. Like with grease stains, simply add 100 milliliters (nearly seven tablespoons) of distilled white vinegar to the drawer of your washing machine before washing and drying as normal. Your garment should be good as new, whether you were dealing with mashed potatoes or butternut squash.
- Dairy. Gently blot the excess dairy with a clean cloth or paper towel. Avoid rubbing, as it can push the stain deeper. Apply a pre-wash stain remover or a mixture of water and white vinegar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes, then launder as usual. Soak the fabric in cold water for 15–30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.
- Coffee and Tea Stains. Rogue coffee or tea doesn’t stand a chance if you’ve got hydrogen peroxide on hand. Just pour a bit directly on the stain, then allow it to do its work for 15 or 20 minutes. Scrub lightly with a soft bristle brush. You can repeat both steps before laundering if the stain persists.
