Let’s Deal Dirt On The Countertop (Whatever Surface It Has)

It’s a prep space and a clutter magnet! It’s where we display a new and fancy air fryer and it’s the busiest place during a birthday. These make our kitchen countertops much deserving of a whole lot of love.  House cleaning is already overwhelming so here are the tricks to clean all types of kitchen counters made from granite, ceramic, tile, wood, and more.

  1. Granite countertops. Wipe the surface with warm, soapy water, and rinse. Use a mild bleach solution for disinfection. No abrasive cleanser or scrub pads, please. For stains, a paste of baking soda and water will do with a gentle scrub. To seal granite countertops, get the appropriate sealer formulated for stones. This will prevent further stains and make it easier to keep clean.
  1. Laminated countertops. Use warm, soapy water, and mild bleach solution, and make sure to use non-abrasive kitchen cleaner. Abrasive cleaning pads or those stiff-bristled brushes can scratch surfaces. A soft toothbrush is a good tool to go through seams or along metal edging. Avoid hard bleaching solutions as they can discolor the surface. If there’s build-up, grab vinegar and water. No sealing is needed for a laminated countertop.
  1. Stone Countertops. Maybe limestone, slate, or soapstone. The same usual warm, soapy water and mild bleach solution. Never try acidic cleaners like vinegar and lemon, they can etch the stone. For stains, gently scrub with a baking soda-water paste and brush softly. Avoid abrasions. To keep it sealed, grab a suitable sealer from the store.
  1. Butcher-block Countertops. Wet a soft cloth with a solution of water mixed with a few drops of your dishwashing liquid.  Don’t leave it wet by drying it with a soft cloth. A bleach mix solution can kill bacteria and other contaminants from the raw meat.  For stains: sprinkle salt, scrub with lemon, and wash the next day. If stains persist, try dabbing hydrogen peroxide using a cotton swab. Finally to seal: oil the surface with mineral oil and let it soak into the surface.
  1. Ceramic Tile Countertops. Just rinsing thoroughly will do and white vinegar is not appropriate. Tiles don’t stain much but grouts do. It’s a favorite spot of bacteria so you like to scrub it with mild bleach solutions and a toothbrush. To seal, a commercial grout sealer is available.
  1. Marble Countertops. Microfiber works well to avoid streaks. If not available, a soft cloth and a regular cleaning do magic. Remember to always wipe dry after cleaning, and never let it be air dried because a countertop like this is prone to water spots. Acidic liquids can permanently etch your marble, so blot wine, orange juices, and sodas immediately. Deep-seated stains require professional house cleaners. And for final sealing, use a product formulated especially for marble countertops.
